I contacted Dr. Fred Crane for better info. His reply was: "Dear Mark, Three tunes immediately come to my mind, all having words; The Girl I left behind me, The Old Grey Mare, and Buffalo gals. I suggest the first. There may be words to other tunes, but I wouldn't know. All of these would be authentic for the late 1800s. Best, Fred" --
